I didn’t realize initially that Volks USA would be having a one-off lottery to celebrate the branch’s renewal. When I did learn, I didn’t anticipate participating. The beauty of the Miruku one-off overwhelmed me, and after much deliberation I submitted an entry. I fully expected to lose. When I saw the email in my inbox from Volks, I clicked on it thinking, “Ah, here’s the message telling me I didn’t win.” Oh wait, it was the message telling me the exact opposite!

There’s something really wonderful about having a Volks one-off. It feels extra-special, somehow, even though the doll I won is the product of someone else’s design thoughts and execution. There’s always a lot of focus, at least in the English-speaking ball-jointed doll communities, about originality and customizing a doll… but I feel a shocking amount of admiration and excitement to have this doll that instead expresses someone else’s ideas.
